Hygge vs Hangover

My usual New Years Day tradition is to rise before the sun, embrace my morning rituals, take my dog for a walk and FIRST CHAIR! Gotta be snapped into my bindings, ready & waiting when the lifts start spinning.

Today, rain is sluicing down my windows vs me schussing down the mountain. Although I tried sending waves of positivity and change to the meteorologists and Mother Nature , I knew I was not waking up to fresh powder & bluebird skies this morning , and that’s ok.

My dog looked at me with expectant eyes and excited wagetty tail. No rain on his parade or change in routine, his built in all weather furry coat is perfect for any wintry outing. We braved the elements and morning dark. The air smelled fresh and clean, felt soft and warm after the arctic blast of last week. We walked our loop, somewhat protected by the canopy of pines thus returning only slightly damp. Goretex is a wonderful invention for humans. The droplets rolled off my coat and my pup’s thick fur.

My percolator wafted rich aromas to welcome us upon our return. I sliced cranberry walnut bread, fresh from our local baker, softened butter at the ready to slather on. A quick fire was built, grateful for all the wood we had stacked in the fall, including the large dry pile next to the hearth. I snuggled into my blankets with my mug of coffee & toast, relishing the moment to reflect on the beauty of my day ahead.

I have enjoyed many a raucous New Year’s eve, ringing the bell at midnight and carrying on. These days I prefer celebrating New Years Day. Last night we had a joyous evening of tea, games, homemade chile, cupcakes and camaraderie. Although, today not the day I planned, I am happy to embrace Hygge vs a hangover. Hygge as defined in the English Oxford Dictionary is “A quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture)”.

Happy pup by my side, a current book I was half way through and eager to dive back into, along with a whole shelf of titles I was looking forward to reading over the coming year, I feel excited to lean into whatever the day lays out for me. I believe there are breaks in the clouds this afternoon, excited for another walk, but until then: Hygge.
